Experiment 2: Noirmoutier and the famous Passage du Gois

Discovery of Noirmoutier near the campsite in Vendée

For this day, we suggest you set off to discover the island of Noirmoutier. Or also called the Mimosa Island… This experience will appeal to foodies and lovers of wide-open spaces. It’s entirely possible to visit the island of Noirmoutier in a day. We’re going to give you all our tips to best prepare your outing. Follow the guide…

Practical tips before you leave:

  • put on a good pair of shoes
  • Check the tide times
  • Fill your water bottle
  • Prepare a nice picnic
  • bring a hat or cap

Get up early to make the most of your day and all the island has to offer.
To come to the island of Noirmoutier from the campsite Les Alizés, two options are available to you:

You can take the bridge to Noirmoutier. 583 metres long, it offers a magnificent view over the Bay of Bourgneuf. It is accessible all year round. At low tide, you can see two shipwrecks dating from the Second World War. It takes approximately 46 minutes to get to Noirmoutier by bridge from Camping les Alizés. Alternatively, opt for the famous Passage du Gois. By taking the Gois, it will take you approximately 57 minutes to reach the island from the campsite. But the charm of this place is well worth a few extra minutes. The Gois is a unique road in France. It is completely submerged at high tide (which is why we advised you to check the tide times).

The road is 4.3 kilometres long, which is to say 4.3 kilometres of happiness!
Savourez cette expérience unique… Profitez de ce paysage somptueux, presque irréel.
Le Gois is the favourite spot for rock poolers during the spring tides.

An iodine-filled escapade on the island of Noirmoutier

Once on the island, start your visit at the Polder de Sébastopol. This 133-hectare nature reserve offers a breathtaking panorama of unspoilt nature.
Take the road north of the island towards Noirmoutier en l'île. There, you can leave your car in a car park for the rest of the trip. We recommend bicycles to continue your journey. Start your walk by wandering through the narrow streets lined with white houses with blue shutters. Stroll down the shopping street and discover the pretty little craft shops.
A few metres further on, you'll enter the town's historic centre and admire its church and castle. Climb the castle ramparts for a panoramic view of the island with the ocean as a backdrop.
Go to the port. Continue along the quays to the Plage des Sableaux.
Continuing your walk to the famous Plage des Dames, you will gradually reach the heart of the Bois de la Chaize.
This is a very popular spot. Indeed, its natural charm has captured the hearts of many a traveller. If you fancy a picnic, we suggest you put your towel down in the heart of the Pines. To round off the day, head for the village of Le Vieil. Continue along the cycle path, which will take you back to Noirmoutier en l'île to complete the loop.

End the day on a high note… To end the day in the best possible way, and because comfort follows effort… choose from the delicious restaurants of Noirmoutier-en-l'Île to sample local specialities. Here are a few establishments we recommend:

  • Le P’tit Noirmout’
  • The Little Bench
  • Take-off

The island of Noirmoutier offers postcard-perfect scenery, so if you're a photography enthusiast, make the most of it without moderation.
